Barn Star Sampler Update from Allen Quilts

I finished two more of the 24” blocks for the Barn Star Sampler I’m making. This block was pretty fun to make. I didn’t have to use the seam ripper near as much as I did on the last block. After I finished them, I took all the blocks I have so far and laid… Continue reading Barn Star Sampler Update

The Highlight of my Week from Allen Quilts

I have been very busy this past week. It was a good week, just busy. I started and finished a custom quilting job, but it’s going to a guild challenge, so can’t share just yet, tho I doubt any of the guild members are reading this. Probably better safe than sorry. I started yet another… Continue reading The Highlight of my Week

Sunday Funday Quilting and a Fun New Notion from Allen Quilts

I didn’t get too very much accomplished, but I did get the blocks for my great niece’s quilt all laid out and ready to stitch together. It’s another Strip Mirage, (pattern from Sew Yeah Quilting) and I used a jelly roll I have had in my stash for quite a long time. A little bonus… Continue reading Sunday Funday Quilting and a Fun New Notion

Sunday Funday Catching Up from Allen Quilts

This past week, my quilting attention went mostly to this lovely Optical Illusions quilt that I am quilting for a client. She made it for her 16 year old grandson. I felt a little intimidated by it at first, but this has actually turned out to be so much fun to work on. The center… Continue reading Sunday Funday Catching Up

Busy Monday from Allen Quilts

I’m trying to get into a better time management routine between my housework, my quilting business, and my personal quilting time. I used to subscribe to Flylady years ago, and I’m giving that another whirl. After the required morning caffeination, I get myself ready and then tend some household chores before I start my quilting… Continue reading Busy Monday

Blue and yellow sunburst from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! So here we are in November, all of a sudden. Wasn't it just September? I can't keep track, except that it's definitely cooled off and we even had a freeze the other night. And it really is dark when I get home, so we must be slouching towards winter. As long as the snow holds off for a bit more, I think we'll be okay.

So, it isn't Friday, but I do have a finish. I know, it's like I'm breaking a rule! But I finally got pictures taken yesterday so ...

Peace and plenty of color from The Academic Quilter

Hi all! How has your week been? We have moved on from hot and dry to extremely hot and just about to storm like crazy. We broke temperature records four days in a row this week. Try to imagine college students in a classroom in a building built in the 1890s when it's 100 degrees outside. Zero fun, do not recommend.

I have a fun finsh to show off today, though-- I have finished the top of the Peace and Plenty quilt! Take a look and see if you think it's as gorgeous as I do:

Wow, that ...

fractured top finish from Making A Lather

I added more rows and now fractured squares is sewn together. I made it smaller than the free pattern. I like it, and, it was a good stash buster. I don't think I want to finish it right now. I have several higher priority quilts I am working to finish. I have more blocks that would easily make a cute baby quilt. But, that is for another day.

checkered past finish from Making A Lather

checkered past is finished. It is made using recycled shirt fabric from thrift store shirts.  checkered past is a free pattern from quilted twins. There are only 16 blocks which doesn't sound like very many, but there 48 squares around each center. that's 960 squares. The block is 16 1/2.

64 x 88 =18 yards

I used leftover pieces for the border

I used navy binding and free form swirls quilting

This will be a donation to our local veterans home

A small riot of color from The Academic Quilter

Hello everyone! Guess what? It isn't raining, for the first time in days, literally. Holy cow, it has been gray here. But I'm looking out the window right now and it looks like the sun is out and nothing is falling from the sky. And wonder of wonders, the grass got cut yesterday. I'd say it was knee-high, which would be an exaggeration, but it certainly felt that way.

This is our last week of class, so I haven't had a lot of time, but I did put together a small quilt top from some leftover ...

Filling the borders from The Academic Quilter

[There is a small giveaway at the end of this post!]

Hello everyone, from a still-soggy Baltimore! It rained two inches today and is supposed to rain all weekend. I wouldn't mind since we planted grass seed and such, but it also got cold again. The heat is back on and the gutters are working overtime.

All of which made getting pictures of this week's project pretty difficult. Here is the best outdoor picture I got, on the covered back porch:

Not too terribly bad for a rainy day! At least you can see the borders pretty well ...

scrappy pinwheels is a top from Making A Lather

I am surprised that this quilt is larger than expected. I thought it would be a small lap quilt, but, it is a good size lap quilt. Scrappy pinwheels is a top. I really like the pattern and revisiting older scraps. Hopefully, it will get a turn on the long arm soon.

I started it in 2018 cutting the pieces and sewing some flippy corners. It went into the ufo closet for a vacation.

I made it a goal here in February as part of the 5 quilts project. It has been a delight to work with it.

My version ...

twisted braid finish from Making A Lather

I have a finish. Twisted braid is ready to gift. I drew this ufo number for my 5 quilts earlier this year, just about the time, I learned my new Grandbaby will be a boy.  perfect timing

64 x 64 = 14 yards

I used a lovely, sheet for the back and free motion bubbles for the quilting.

Scraps all around from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! I hope you have had a good week. I am starting to see some leaf buds on our trees, and I am happy dancing like crazy over that. Soon there will be leaves! That means there will be shade over the balcony and the deck again, and at some point it might get warm enough to have breakfast outside again. Won't that be glorious?

If you have been following along, you'll know that I started the Stay at Home Round Robin, a project hosted by Quilting Gail and featuring several of my favorite bloggers. (waving wildly ...

My SEWJO is back from Northern Deb Quilts

I finished a top! This is super thrilling for me since lately I just haven't felt like sewing.  I lost my SEWJO in January and just couldn't get it back.
Well, this past weekend we met up with family.  I met a niece for the first time and her two adorable little girls. I have tops made for the little ones but just haven't had the ambition to quilt them. But now I do!
First I figured I'd get this top off the floor and onto the "to be quilted" pile.
I woke up early, started ...

A taste of spring from The Academic Quilter

Hello quilty friends! How was your week? Mine was more of the same, except for that one day where it hit 80 degrees. Not joking! It was a taste of spring that didn't last very long, because although today has dawned nice and sunny, it may snow this afternoon. Again, not joking! It's going to be a good day to read and sew.

The weather was not the real taste of spring for this week, though. It was this happy and fun pink quilt top that I finished just yesterday:

A little washed out by morning light, but ...

twisted braid top from Making A Lather

I auditioned neutral, red, and light blue for the sashing. But, I decided to use dark blue. The top is ready for quilting as soon as there is time on the longarm.

I found this pattern in this book. I have had it for awhile. I cut and put the pattern together as a kit in 2018. I drew it as a random number for part of my 5 quilts early this year. I took it as a portable project to  piece and when all the other quilts on the list were waiting to be quilted, I finished it here ...

boho top from Making A Lather

I have made great progress on boho heart. Another day at the library, and, I was able to assemble the right section of the heart. I have had the left section together for some time.

I was inspired to bring the left section with me, even if, I wasn't sure how much I could get done at open sew.

Now my heart is complete, warts and all. What a relief to get to this point. There were 5 of us working on this at the same time. I am the last one to get it to this point. I ...

Feeling kinda modern from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! How are you doing these days? Things have not been too snappy here at chez AQ, topped off with a root canal and then final exams. Talk about piling on! But we're not going to dwell on the negative and instead we're just going to look at a nice quilt top I finished off this week. It's a little modern and a little different for me, but it turned out quite well and I'm pretty happy with it.

Here is my finished Solstice Sampler quilt top:

Sparkly stars from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! Somehow, it was 72 degrees here today. Has someone checked to be sure it's November? I know some people have had snow already, but it looks like we're sticking with rain and above average temperatures for the next little bit. Totally okay with me, except for the leaves that keep falling.

I've got a finished top to show off today. It's my stars top from this year's rainbow scrap challenge, and I'm fairly happy with how it turned out. Here she is:

Well, that is different, isn't it? But quite sparkly ...
